Corporate Finance
The term corporate finance characterises a special area of business financing that deals with optimal financial structure and company dividend policy, evaluates investment decisions and determines company value.
The area is subdivided into long and short-term decision-making processes. These primarily aim to increase company value by raising the ROI or by lowering capital expenditure without running the risk of exceeding the company’s own risk tolerance.
Long-term capital investment decisions include choosing an investment project whilst deliberating whether the project should be financed with equity and/or external finance. Another issue is whether dividends should be paid to shareholders and, if yes, when.
Short-term decisions are termed working capital management and deal with the management of current assets and liabilities. These pay special attention to liquidity management, optimising the capital formation in stock, short-term debts and funds.
Corporate finance is part of financial management. It has a fairly large scope of application which, alongside private law corporations, is relevant to all other types of organisations.
